UPV Teaching and Learning Resource Center

UPV TaLAS team conducts echo-workshop

Following the participation of UP Visayas in the UP System-wide Teaching and Learning Activities for SUCs, or “TaLAS” Course I: Building a Teaching Effectiveness Program workshop on November 21-22, 2023 at the UP School of Economics, the faculty participants from the different colleges and representatives of the Teaching and Learning Resource Center conducted an echo-workshop of the same topic on November 27-28, 2024 at the MILC AVR.

The two-day echo-workshop was attended by faculty members of the different colleges and divisions of UP Visayas and was facilitated by the UPV TaLAS Team, namely Asst. Prof. Katherine T. Valencia, former director of the TLRC, Asst. Prof. Joemel G. Sumbing from the School of Technology, Asst. Prof. Ysabella P. Cainglet from the College of Management, Asst. Prof. Pearl Angeli P. Pedroso from the College of Arts and Sciences, Asst. Prof. Jonalyn P. Mateo from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, and Mr. Yan Esquivel, University Extension Associate of the TLRC. The current director and staff of the TLRC served as support members in the implementation of the program.

Following the outline of the system-wide TaLAS Course I, Prof. Valencia discussed the importance of knowing “how adult learners learn” and how they would bring about success in planning and implementing teaching effectiveness programs for faculty members. It was then followed by the sharing of Prof. Valencia and Prof. Cainglet several key experiences during the External Quality Assurance assessment of their respective degree programs.

Prof. Cainglet, along with Prof. Mateo and Prof. Pedroso, then echoed the discussion on the MISMO framework which they learned during the system-wide workshop, which served as a guide for participants in coming up with teaching effectiveness programs for their respective colleges and divisions.
Following the workshop output from the system-wide workshop delivered by Mr. Esquivel of the TLRC, the participants then worked on planning and strategizing teaching effectiveness programs they can work on for their own respective units.

The team consisted of faculty members from the Division of Social Sciences, Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Department of Physical Education came up with a vision of digitizing and gamifying GE courses through virtual reality platforms. Meanwhile, the second group from the College of Arts and Sciences consisted of faculty members from the Division of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry envisioned a teaching effectiveness program that focused on strengthening the skills of faculty members in designing effective teaching materials and instructional aids.

The output of the College of Management focused mainly on leveraging alumni support to strengthen delivery of instruction by pooling expertise from the graduates of their degree programs. The School of Technology group focused on organizing a hackathon-type activity that would enable experiential learning to its students and faculty members.

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences group on the other hand, conceptualized a teaching effectiveness program that taps into their industry partners who share expertise and experience to their students during practicum. Their teaching effectiveness program concept followed a thorough process that provides learning opportunities to both student and faculty members.

The TLRC hopes that through the program, the facilitators were able to echo their learning experience from the system-wide TaLAS workshop and that the program will bring fruitful learning opportunities for the faculty members of UP Visayas which would enrich the teaching and learning environment in UPV.

SPF Survey

The Teaching and Learning Resource Center invites all UPV constituents (students, faculty, staff, and REPS) to answer its SPF 2024 Survey, a survey dedicated to help the TLRC grasp specific needs of the UPV clients with regards to its services, programs, and facilities. Responses on this survey would allow the TLRC gain insights on how to improve its service delivery, delivery of programs, and utilization of facilities.
